Since its foundation in 1969, the Simón I. Patiño Educational and Cultural Centre has organised over 2,900 cultural events – attended by more than 252,000 people – and around 4m library visits, and has hosted more than 1.5m visitors to Portales Palace and its exhibitions

The Educational and Cultural Centre plays a key role in promoting all aspects of Bolivia’s culture, including its arts scene and literature, through the organisation of numerous events and activities throughout the year. We also encourage research and the learning of literacy through our own network of external libraries, as well as running training programmes for primary and secondary school teachers.

Our Centre promotes research into - and appreciation and dissemination of - Bolivian and Latin American culture through events, such as exhibitions, concerts, plays, lectures, festivals and conferences.

Principal annual festivals at the Centre

  • The Luz Mila Patiño National Festival, which is dedicated to the preservation of Bolivia’s rich ethnic musical heritage
  • The International Festival of Contemporary Dance, featuring performances from prestigious international companies
  • The Open Sky Latin American Cine-Documentary Festival, highlighting artistic and narrative elements of the genre

Key annual meetings hosted by the Centre

  • We promote panel discussions with Latin American writers, authors, poets and literary critics around specific themes related to the region’s literature
  • We provide a Bolivian Writers’ Forum, promoting thought and discussion
  • We organise guided visits of the Palacio Portales in Cochabamba, where we also host major international meetings

La Paz & El Alto

The Patiño Foundation carries out a range of cultural, educational and literary activities at its facility in La Paz, Bolivia’s capital city.

In order to address the needs of the rural population that has moved to El Alto, Bolivia’s second-largest city, our Foundation has built a nutrition Centre there that helps over 220 children each year.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de la Sierra is Bolivia’s fastest-growing city and largest economic centre. It is home to many petrochemical and agricultural companies. As the city is located in the country’s tropical lowlands, the Foundation plays a pivotal role in educating the local population and farmers to work with the area’s fragile environment. In addition, we provide a hugely-popular programme of cultural and educational activities.

The Foundation’s administrative headquarters has been situated in Geneva since 1958. All our student scholarships are administered from here, as are our wider activities across Bolivia. Throughout the year, we host a series of cultural events in Geneva, aimed at promoting youth talent in Switzerland.
